Branford, Connecticut Expanding Solar Through Installations and Incentives
The small beachside town of Branford, Connecticut has embraced solar power as a way of ensuring energy savings and meeting the town’s sustainability goals. Thanks to an exciting mix of existing and planned installations, state-based incentive programs, and careful planning, solar panels are going up at a quick pace in Branford.
- Created an online permitting checklist, increasing transparency for community members and solar installers
- Reviewed local zoning codes and identified restrictions that intentionally or unintentionally prohibit solar PV development
- Allowed solar by-right accessory use in all zones (so solar installations don’t require special permits or hearings)
- Cross-trained both inspection and permitting staff on solar PV
- Provided a streamlined permitting pathway for small PV systems
This accomplishment was a team effort of the Branford Clean Energy Committee and town offices working together to encourage solar energy in Branford. Solar energy will help move Branford to a greener, more resilient, and money-saving infrastructure while contributing to Connecticut’s goal of 100% renewable-sourced electricity by 2040.
